From an idea to a commitment

An idea can change everything. Perhaps it stems from a personal experience, a desire for change, or the feeling that something is missing in Stuttgart.

Here you’ll find everything you need – from initial guidance and practical planning right through to premises, networks and funding. Step by step, at a pace that suits you.

Ready to get started?

Some ideas just stick with you. Here you’ll find everything that lies between the initial idea and the finished project.

Every change begins with an idea. Often, a small spark is enough to bring about great things. Your commitment is more than just a personal act. It helps us achieve a shared goal and strengthen a sense of solidarity.

Many ideas stem from personal experiences – be it everyday challenges, a lack of support and assistance, or the desire to increase participation. For ideas to become viable projects, you need motivation, a bit of structure, and an understanding of how needs, resources, participation and funding all fit together.

Motivation for getting involved

Now it’s time to make your idea more concrete. What do you want to change or make possible? Why is this important to you, and what values guide you in this? Who will benefit from the project, and who should get involved?

Perhaps your project is aimed at residents of a particular neighbourhood, at people with specific needs, or at those who want to campaign on issues such as climate change or animal welfare.

Next, it’s worth taking a look at what’s already available: what’s out there? What’s still missing? What makes your project unique?

Step by step towards your project

  • Finding supporters: The exchange platforms can help with this
  • Clarify roles: Who does what by when?
  • Assess resources: time, money, premises, expertise
  • Launch the pilot phase: with clear objectives, regular feedback and a willingness to make adjustments
  • Communicate openly: transparency builds trust and keeps projects alive

Ultimately, a joint, transparent and goal-oriented collaboration results in something lasting.

Spaces play a central role in every project. Physical spaces give us opportunities to meet, try things out and have new experiences. Digital spaces expand these possibilities. They connect people, make it easier to coordinate and allow for flexible collaboration.

Working and presenting digitally also involves developing one’s own digital skills. The Centre for Digital Inclusion at the Department for Social Affairs and Inclusion offers services for older people.

Visibility is also important. A clear website and targeted communication via social media make access easier and build trust. Transparent information, easy ways to get in touch and an appealing presentation of the project attract interested parties and increase its reach through a strong core message.

Physical and digital work can complement each other very well. What is established in face-to-face meetings can be continued digitally, and what begins online gains depth through personal interaction.

Using spaces in Stuttgart Shaping public relations

Things might not all be clear at the start. That’s normal. You can learn, step by step, many useful basics, such as how to perceive your surroundings, set goals or respond flexibly to change.

The learning portal run by the German Foundation for Civic Engagement and Volunteering offers a wide range of free seminars and practical advice on these topics.

It’s also worth making use of existing networks. Contacts from your own voluntary work or from local authority departments often know exactly which resources and experiences will help your project move forward.

If you have any general questions, please feel free to contact the ‘Promotion of Civic Engagement’ department of the State Capital of Stuttgart.

If you’d like to exchange practical experiences with experts in direct support for civic engagement, please feel free to contact the “Social Engagement and Neighbourhoods” department.

Depending on the project, funding options may include local foundations, municipal funding programmes or crowdfunding. Make sure you find out about funding options at an early stage.
