What sort of protection is important?
When it comes to volunteering, there are two key questions:
What happens if I’m involved in an accident myself?
What happens if I cause damage to others?
Characteristics of volunteering
Volunteering is generally voluntary and benefits other people or the common good. It often takes place within an organised framework, for example in a club, an initiative, an organisation or a project.
Common characteristics of voluntary work include:
- carried out voluntarily
- unpaid – an expense allowance (e.g. a flat-rate allowance for volunteers or activity leaders) may be provided
- carried out regularly or on a recurring basis
- organised and structured
- for the benefit of others or the common good
Insurance rules are complex and subject to change. The information on this page provides a general overview and is not a substitute for individual legal advice. For up-to-date and binding information, we recommend contacting the relevant insurance provider or volunteering co-ordinator directly.

Security creates a favourable environment
Good insurance cover helps to ensure that voluntary work is carried out reliably. It provides peace of mind for volunteers and supports organisations in fulfilling their responsibilities effectively.
That is why it is worth clarifying any questions regarding insurance cover at an early stage – particularly when taking on new tasks, organising events or working in specific locations.
