Liability insurance whilst volunteering
When volunteering, it is possible that damage may be caused accidentally: someone may be injured or someone else’s property may be damaged. In such cases, liability insurance can be important. The level of cover you have depends on whether you are volunteering through an organisation, a club or an independent initiative.
Important to note: Insurance cover does not usually apply if the insured event is caused intentionally (Section 81(2) of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG)). In cases of gross negligence, the insurer may reduce its payout proportionally depending on the severity of the fault (Section 81(2) of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG)); depending on the type of insurance, further exclusions may also be stipulated in the contract. Before you get involved, it is worth checking with your organisation to find out whether and exactly how you are covered by third-party liability insurance.
What cover applies to you?
Whether you’re involved on a private basis, through a club or via an organisation, liability cover varies depending on the nature of your involvement. The following points outline what applies to you and what you should bear in mind.
In the event of a claim
