House of Engagement
The House of Engagement is to be built in the heart of Stuttgart, offering space for personal development – for networking, advice, placement and training, with spaces for ideas, innovative ways of working and new collaborations. The Stuttgart Community Foundation, the City of Stuttgart and the Caleidoskop Volunteer Centre are leading the planning process.
The Vision
A central location in the heart of Stuttgart where civic engagement can pool its resources and become visible and easily accessible to the city’s community. This is where civic engagement comes to life: organisations plan projects and events, those interested can develop their skills, volunteers put ideas into practice and try out new approaches, foundations offer fresh perspectives, and businesses contribute their drive and expertise.
Many creative people – volunteers and full-time staff – work together in co-working spaces. Visitors and users experience an open atmosphere that encourages them to linger, meet one another, learn and contribute their own ideas. The building is designed to be accessible and barrier-free, open to the neighbourhood and well-connected. Plans include flexible event spaces, offices and co-working spaces, a media room, a café and open-access areas.
What is the House of Engagement intended to be?
- A place where ideas flourish: The Haus des Engagements is available to all committed individuals and groups to initiate projects and plan events.
- A place of shared identity: The House of Engagement is intended to be a meeting place where people of different ages, backgrounds and social circumstances can interact and share experiences; in this way, it helps to counter social division.
- A place with a strong appeal: The House of Engagement raises the profile of civic engagement and its indispensable contribution to urban society.
- A place that pools resources: At the Haus des Engagements, local government, politicians, businesses and civil society can work closely together – particularly in times of crisis – to use their expertise and networks to quickly match available resources with needs.
- A place that brings Stuttgart together: At the Haus des Engagements, groups, businesses and foundations can cooperate, support one another and inspire each other.
- A place for encounters: The Haus des Engagements is a place where people come into contact with one another; in doing so, it makes an important contribution to combating loneliness.
- A dynamic place: Civic engagement is constantly evolving, and young, fresh ideas find a creative playground here.
The current status of the plans
Over the past few years, a concept for the House of Engagement has been developed. In 2019, the project was accepted into the IBA’27 network.
Since summer 2020, the experimental space at Katharinenstraße 21D has been used to gather insights into the requirements a ‘Haus des Engagements’ should meet.
During the ‘Tour of Good Places for Engagement’, various organisations and projects were visited, with the focus on the question of what makes a good place for engagement. The insights gained are being incorporated into the plans for the House of Engagement.
In July 2026, the local council resolved to examine whether the ground floor and basement of the former Kaufhof building on Eberhardstraße/Steinstraße could accommodate the House of Engagement and the House of Cultures. A utilisation concept is currently being drawn up.
