Café Kränzchen

The cemetery café ‘Café Kränzchen’ is open from April to October. There, volunteers work alongside staff at two cemeteries in Stuttgart – the Main Cemetery and the Prag Cemetery – to create a special place to pause and socialise. They set up tables and chairs and invite cemetery visitors and passers-by to linger and strike up a conversation over coffee and homemade cake.

What we achieve

Café Kränzchen reduces social isolation, strengthens the sense of community and encourages people to get involved and volunteer. Every week, more than 80 guests visit our cafés, which have been lovingly designed. Under the large trees, they find a special place where they feel welcome, can strike up conversations and make new friends. The topics of death and grief are ever-present, yet they feel much easier to deal with amidst the beautiful natural surroundings and in the company of others.

That’s what sets us apart

Everyone talks about loneliness; we create more opportunities for people to meet. The passer-by walking home from nursery with her child is just as welcome to take part in our free activities as the elderly man visiting his wife’s grave with a bouquet of roses. Also worth highlighting is the successful collaboration with the City of Stuttgart’s Cemetery Department and the parish churches to ‘bring to life’ this ‘third place’ with activities designed to combat loneliness.

What our volunteers say

Manfred

I joined as a member of the parish council and really enjoy spending time with the people – in all their diversity – who come here to enjoy afternoon coffee and cake.

Angelika

I enjoy doing voluntary work and thought the cemetery café was a brilliant idea. I’ve given it a go and I really like it. You get to meet people and have lovely chats there.
