Empowerment through Art

‘Colours of My World: Empowerment through Art’ is an informal, community-based educational programme for children living in social accommodation. In a safe space, they can be creative, express themselves and interact with one another. Through various artistic methods, including creating their own works, the programme promotes self-efficacy, language-independent expression and social participation. Socially committed individuals support the children and provide creative inspiration.

What we achieve

Children living in social accommodation experience that their ideas, stories and perspectives are recognised and valued. They discover their own abilities, develop their ability to express themselves and build their self-confidence. They become part of a community that they help to shape. This becomes particularly clear when they present the works they have created themselves to other children and volunteers, and proudly engage in conversation about them. In that moment, they actively make themselves visible, find their own voice and become a source of inspiration for others.

Volunteers play a key role in this process. They act as catalysts and facilitators. They support the informal educational programme and, through exploring art, can build a bridge to the children in their often challenging life situations. In this way, volunteers experience the children’s successes in a special way.

What sets us apart

The children themselves are at the heart of what we do: their perspectives and lived experiences form the starting point for artistic exploration. Together with an experienced artist and dedicated volunteers, we create a safe space for creativity, interaction and social participation. We coordinate the creative activities within the community and support the volunteers in their roles, ensuring they interact with the children with openness and respect. The children create their own works and are then given the opportunity to present them to others and share their own stories.
